Online Based Exams

In February 2020, the NSW Bar Association introduced on-line computer- based exams to the NSW Bar examinations.
Candidates will complete the examination by typing their answers on a laptop computer and will need to download
proprietary security software in order to sit the examinations.

This program is required to be downloaded after the exam registration closing to ensure candidates’ laptops meet the minimum system requirements.

After registration close, it is highly recommended all candidates download the software and attempt the past paper to familiarise themselves with the system.

On the day of examination, 2 question papers (1 for each sitting) will be provided to each candidate and
they will be required to type all answers into the software.

At the end of each examination session, candidates will be required to submit their answers electronically before exiting the exam room.

Interstate and overseas candidates will sit under the same examination conditions and will be required to follow the same process as in Sydney.
Further information, including instructions to download the necessary software, will be provided to candidates after registration.

Note that candidates who wish to use a laptop provided by the NSWBA will incur a $150 non-refundable fee.
ONLY Sydney based candidates sitting the exam are able to apply for a laptop through the NSWBA.

As of 2020 all NSWBA Bar Exams will be conducted on a laptop computer. On exam day I will use;

The number of participants in each readers’ course is limited to 54 places. Please refer to s.2(b) of the Bar Practice Course Policy regarding allocation of places.

The NSWBA recently updated the Bar Practice Course Policy and as such some of our processes have changed. Candidates are most likely aware of our old processes where you nominated a BPC Course Preference and were sent an invitation only to that nominated course. In the instance where you nominated the 3rd BPC you were made no guarantees as to whether a spot would be reserved for you.

The updated Policy, now states the Priority Order for applicants. As such our processes have changed in terms of invitations. Now and moving forward, everyone who has passed the Bar Exam will be sent an invitation to the upcoming BPC. We will still ask candidates for their preference in order to assist us in our planning, however the places for the course will be of a “first come first serve” nature. Section 2C of the policy states “In the event that a particular Course becomes oversubscribed by reason of applications made by candidates on the same date, then as between candidates making applications on that day, priority shall be determined by a random selection conducted by the Bar Association.”

Please indicate your preference below to assit in our initial planning.
