Advocating on Screen

Meeting the challenges of the “virtual” environment

Our profession and judicial system are forever altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost overnight, technology now plays a dominant role in so many aspects of practice with personal appearances, face to face meetings, team briefings, mediations and arbitrations in person often replaced by video conferencing.

Delivering your best performance in these circumstances is essential to justice and requires specialised skills.

It seems certain that remote hearings and meetings will continue to be an important part of the system. Digital communication comes with challenges, but there are proven ways to do it successfully.

The NSW Bar Association presents a two hour seminar to hone your presentation skills on screen:

Advocating on Screen – meeting the challenges of the “virtual” environment

Presented by the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA)

27th August, 2020 at 5.30pm

Location – On screen

Cost - $65

Global leaders in the field of on-screen presentation training, NIDA’s Corporate Training team has worked with us to develop this session to optimise your performance and address the particular challenges faced by barristers when advocating online.

NIDA will address and develop strategies to:

improve your online presence

refine digital communication skills including voice

increase the participants' awareness of on-screen dynamics and body awareness

provide specialist tools to enable you to be more effective online.

Much like an online hearing, participants will require an adequate camera, audio and internet set-up; sufficient private space with a non-identifiable background and a little standing room as there will be some exercises that will require participants to stand and move around.

This course has been run once before and the feedback was overwhelming:

“If you want to … command an audience and KNOW that you will present the best version of you every time, then this course is your tool for success – life changing”

“This was the best oral advocacy course I have ever done.  It was the most effective and unexpectedly best use of 2 hours of my time on a Wednesday evening.”

“After 45 years as a barrister, 30 as a QC, I found it stimulating, & a useful exercise in self-examination.  A very important 2 hours”
