Lester Fernandez, Barrister, Forbes Chambers

Lester Fernandez is a barrister at Forbes Chambers and is now in his 14th year at the Bar. He practices primarily in criminal law, at both trial and appellate level.  

Lester loves being a barrister and has a particular interest in teaching advocacy at the Bar Practice Course, in being a member of the Bar Association's Education Committee, and in being a member of the Bar Association's Criminal Law Committee.

Sean Docker, Barrister, University Chambers

Sean Docker is a barrister at University Chambers, a leading commercial law chambers in Sydney. Sean was admitted to the Supreme Court as a legal practitioner in 1999, working as a solicitor before being called to the bar in August 2004. His busy practice encompasses alternative dispute resolution, appellate, building & construction, commercial, corporations, equity, estate/probate & wills, insolvency and trusts. 

Sean has a keen interest in the education and wellbeing of his peers. He is an active member of the New South Wales Bar Association's Disability Panel and Education Committee. Sean is notably committed to the education and inculcation of the newest members of the bar, regularly undertaking the role of a tutor and devoting his time to teach on the Bar Practice Course as an advocacy coach.

Paul Taylor, Principal, Pattison Hardman

Paul was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia in 1999. He brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of highly contentious litigation, which invariably result in costs issues. He is a Law Society of NSW accredited specialist in the area of advocacy and commercial litigation.

Paul has had conduct of a wide variety of matters refining his skills in large commercial firms. He has had carriage of contentious litigious matters in the State and Federal Courts and Tribunals. These matters have involved blue chip companies, government entities and insurance claims. As such, Paul’s experience as a commercial solicitor gives him a unique insight into costs and costs management.

Paul also manages and leads a busy litigation practice as legal director of ICL Lawyers Pty Ltd and as such has the conduct of claims involving costs issues for clients of his practice and where necessary drawing bills of costs, objections and advice for his clients in respect of costs. With this background Paul can manage the process from initial instructions to enforcement of any certificate of determination of costs.

Charles Ackroyd, Principal, Pattison Hardman

Charles began his costs career as a Law Cost Draftsman and Cost Consultant in London in 1991 where he gained extensive experience in all levels of general litigation and costs disputes.

Upon moving to Australia in 2000 Charles worked for a number of high profile Law firms in house as a Costs Consultant and subsequently established his own Consultancy Firm.  Charles brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team at Pattison Hardman having specialized in the field of Costs Consultancy for in excess of 25 years and having managed teams of costers.

Charles is often engaged by law firms to conduct full audits of their costing framework and work in progress (WIP) funding and exposure.  Charles’s commercial approach to legal practice management and costs consulting provides an invaluable service back to clients resulting in greater costs recovery and fewer costs leakages.  Charles provides annual practice management and compliance training to clients and the industry ensuring that his clients are at the forefront of advancements and developments in the costing arena.

Having worked internally in a large personal injury practice Charles has experienced firsthand the requirements this segment of the industry requires both for personal injury law firms and insurers.  Charles brings a flexible and innovative approach to servicing his clients.

Adjunct Associate Professor Peter Dombkins, Director, PwC Australia – New Law

Peter is a national industry leader in legal transformation and legal project management (LPM), including the development of national LPM standards and certification frameworks. Peter advises to the LPM work streams for CLOC (Australia) and the Law Society of NSW, and is a member of the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) advisory committee reviewing their national project management standards. Peter is an Adjunct Associate Professor specialising in legal operations transformation with the University of NSW’s Faculty of Law, and is a regular presenter at industry conferences in this area. Peter is also Vice President of the NSW Society for Computers and the Law. Prior to joining PwC, Peter was Head of Transformation and LPM at Gilbert + Tobin, where he founded their award-winning function.

Peter is Australia’s first CPPD-certified legal project manager by AIPM, and holds accreditation as a Professional in Business Analysis by the Project Management Institute. Peter is also a Chartered Project Professional with the UK’s Association for Project Management. Peter holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney, and is an inaugural graduate of the world's first Executive Masters degree in Complex Project Management from the Queensland University of Technology.

Peter has 15 years’ experience as a transformation leader and senior program director for complex organisational change programs in the legal, infrastructure, defence and humanitarian sectors across Australasia, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK.

Peter is a former major projects/finance lawyer and Manager of Product Development and for a top-100 global law firm, and has advised UN and national bodies on PPP policy. Peter is also a former policy adviser for Commonwealth Shadow Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Community Services.

Dr Jeff Coulton, Senior Lecturer, UNSW School of Accounting

Jeff Coulton is a Senior Lecturer in the UNSW Business School. Before joining UNSW, Jeff was a lecturer in the School of Accounting at UTS and prior to that at the University of Sydney. In 2006 he was teaching at the University of Texas at Austin. Jeff worked as a solicitor for Corrs Chambers Westgarth for a number of years before returning to academia.

Jeff's research interests include voluntary disclosure, executive remuneration, corporate governance and earnings management, and he has published articles on earnings management, the disclosure of executive compensation and corporate governance.

Jeff's current teaching interest is in the area of financial statement analysis; focusing on business strategy analysis to inform the use of accounting information and other public disclosures in firm valuation. He has also experience in teaching financial reporting courses.

Tony Frost, Frost Leadership Consulting and Consultant & Lecturer, AGSM

Tony has a passion for helping leaders achieve their potential, whether via consulting, coaching, mentoring or training.

With 35 years’ business experience, Tony has held significant leadership roles. Most recently, Tony was Managing Director, for seven years, of tax law firm Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills, one of Australia’s most lauded professional service firms. Amongst other accolades, Greenwoods was named Best Professional Services Firm and Best Law Firm (in its revenue category) in the 2019 Australian Financial Review/Beaton Client Choice Awards.

Prior to forming Frost Leadership Consulting, Tony was one of Australia’s leading tax advisers, and his clients included BHP Billiton, Macquarie Bank and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Before joining Greenwoods in 2003, Tony had been a tax partner at PwC for seven years. Earlier in his career, Tony spent five years working with Westpac Banking Corporation.

Coaching, mentoring and developing people, particularly with a leadership focus, has always been a core and much-loved aspect of Tony’s roles over the years. His philosophy to leadership development is that there is no single, one-size-fits-all approach. Rather, Tony works closely with clients to design an evidence-based development program most appropriate for the client’s circumstances. Leadership development techniques include: consulting, coaching, mentoring and training. Moments of career progression, promotion or transition are a particular focus of Tony’s work.

Dr Ann Kayis-Kumar, Senior Lecturer, School of Taxation and Business Law

Dr Ann Kayis-Kumar is author of Taxing Multinationals (Oxford University Press, 2019) and co-author of the Australian CGT Handbook (since the 8th edition, Thomson Reuters, 2017). Ann teaches and researches in the fields of international and Australian tax law and corporate strategy, exploring avenues by which tax policy can be utilised as a mechanism to achieve social justice.

Awarded the UNSW Business School Dean's Emerging Leadership Award in 2019, Ann is Founding Director of UNSW Tax Clinic, elected Vice-President of the Australasian Tax Teachers’ Association, and serves on both university- and industry-level committees including the UNSW Academic Board, The Tax Institute’s NSW Technical and SME & Tax Practitioner Committees.

Ann's research applies a combination of pure economic theory, optimisation modelling and applied legal research, with a focus on the behavioural responses incentivised by mismatches in the tax system. Ann has a strong interest in supervising research projects on the interaction of these aspects on international tax policy and law design.

Ann has significant teaching experience at both UNSW Business School and University of Sydney Business School, where she has received multiple teaching citations. She has also received multiple prizes for her teaching leadership, including the 2020 UNSW Business School Social Engagement: UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) Award (for mobilising Tax Clinic teaching to attain multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) and the 2018 UNSW Business School John Prescott Award for Outstanding Teaching Innovation (for co-developing the online gamification ‘PlayTax: Adventures in International Tax Planning’). For completeness, Tax Clinic is a capstone elective course in the new BCom program and PlayTax is currently utilised in teaching tax law at both the UNSW Business School and the UNSW Faculty of Law.

She also serves as an Assessor for the Australian Research Council (ARC) and as a Reviewer for ABDC A*-ranked journals including Australian Tax Forum and British Tax Review, and ABDC A-ranked journals including Australian Tax Review and eJournal of Tax Research.
